We get this question often—especially from parents gearing up for prom season, senior photos, or a once-in-a-lifetime event:"Is teeth whitening safe for teens?"
The short answer? Yes—but with care, and usually not too early.
Our Recommended Starting Age
At Lumiglo, we generally recommend waiting until age 16 or older before beginning professional whitening. By this age, most teens have:
All their permanent teeth
Completed (or are near completing) orthodontic treatment
Developed enamel that’s fully matured
Whitening before this stage can lead to uneven results or sensitivity that’s avoidable with a little patience.
Special Event Coming Up? Let’s Chat.
Have a teen heading into prom, graduation, or senior portraits? We’re happy to schedule a quick consult to:
Review their dental history and current oral health
Evaluate if whitening is a good fit at their current stage
Offer gentle, age-appropriate options that are safe and effective
No pressure—just honest guidance to help them look and feel their best without compromising long-term smile health.
Talk to Your Dentist, Too
We always encourage families to check in with their general or pediatric dentist before starting whitening treatments for teens. We’ll happily coordinate care and explain every ingredient we use, so everyone’s on the same page.
